Nominator Paul Stokes, Head of Programmes Health Improvement, says that the COVID-19 pandemic hit hard and early in the London Borough of Southwark. Feelings of uncertainty and fear flourished both in the communities they serve and also within the teams challenged to create vital support and stability during the crisis. Dan recognised that the Southwark Public Health team of 30+ colleagues needed to work together and build team spirit to persevere and thrive successfully. So Dan grasped the nettle and set up, organised and hosted weekly Southwark Public Health Team ‘Lockdown Socials’ evenings. Fun, informative, entertaining team events delivered virtually. Themes for these events included Bingo, Back to School Quiz, Desert Island Discs, Night at the Races, Party Night, A Night out on the Town (Virtual), Fancy Dress. He did all this in additional to his challenging role. The positive impact on the team’s mental health and wellbeing has been invaluable, he is therefore our nomination for Public Health Hero.
